It's a little hard to believe we are done. I've REALLY enjoyed this experience. It was detailed enough to get me introduced to technologies while being brief enough to 1) be doable! and 2) allow me time to really play and engage with the technologies that particularly "tickled my fancy."

I could write a loooong essay on the technologies, how I'm using them now, and how I hope to use them in the future. The technologies from these Things that I am using the most right now are Delicious and my RSS aggregate. I still have my Twitter and Face Book accounts, and I get into them fairly regularly. I'm still on the fence with them, and still pretty untrusting of FB.

I also am using Evernote, which I discovered during my 23 Things experience -- thanks to a blog to which I subscribed!!, and the Yahoo notepad feature. I'm using them to save citations, websites, pdfs, etc. for my dissertation.

This experience and Char Booth's study on how students are using various Web 2.0 technologies (which I ALSO discovered thanks to the blogs to which I subscribed during these Things) have helped me to better hone my dissertation topic, though I still have lots of work to go on it!!!

Wishing you all well!!

Thing 22: The "Things" in Context

This thing actually asks for us to talk a bit about how we could "adapt this program to increase the technology skill level among the staff at your library" (Thing 22). Now, I don't work at a library right now, though I DO want that experience ... so if you hear of any jobs in Weatherford or Ft. Worth, please let me know! Note, though, that I do not have a LS degree. But, I digress ....

As I noted WAY back when we started these Things, I am a PhD student in the Interdisciplinary Information Science at UNT. I work as a teaching and research assistant for a SLIS professor who is an avid ethnographer AND tech lover!! Cool combo, huh?

I believe we as professors and instructors should be teaching future LS and IS professionals how to use these various tools to accomplish tasks they perform in courses. This would help students gain an appreciation and understanding of how the tools work, as well as providing the students with opportunities to implement these tools in new and creative ways.

For example, in our intro and advanced storytelling courses, I think using YouTube for the final concert performances would be fabulous. In the intro course, we could keep the videos private to the class, or allow the students to share them with their friends and family. In the advanced course, our online storytelling concert, which has included streaming video in the past, could incorporate the YouTube technology for publishing the student performances.

Having students collect and share source citations using Delicious, and/or having them rate materials on Stumbe .... Using a faculty blog to organize our teaching team activities (I'd REALLY like to get this one pushed through, and I need to renew my efforts!!!!) ... There are SO many ways these technologies could be implemented into the curriculum that would help student professionals grow AS they complete their course tasks!!!

Thing 21: Podcasts

I've listened to only a few podcasts in the past. Specifically, I've listened to podcasts discussing product features of various GIS software packages.

I looked at some of the podcatchers. The one I was most interested in BlogMatrix Sparks, does not appear to be available anymore. It was an "all in one" package to create, manage, and capture podcasts.

I looked at several library podcast sites linked from the Library Success Wiki page. The Emory Library (Emory University) podcast page no longer existed from the LSW link ... bummer; I thought they might have had something relating to the medical program.

I found the Worthington Libraries Podcasts to be the most interesting. They have separate podcast pages devoted to children (story time podcasts), tweens and teens, and adults. The adult "podcasts" are actually videos on YouTube, but they cover a wide variety of topics ... from a summer book reading list to a series on charting a career course.

The tween/teen podcasts are cool because they are created by and to showcase the winners of the Teen Poetry and Short Story Competition hosted by the library. One of the downsides, though, is that not all of the teens are engaging speakers. However, I think this is a wonderful way to make the competition more interactive and engaging for the patrons.

It seems that podcasting is an extremely popular method for "broadcasting" interviews.

I would like to offer some course lectures as podcasts that can be downloaded to a player. It would be interesting to do a pilot study and/or survey to see how working adult online students, in particular, might profit from that functionality.

Thing 20: YouTube

For this Thing, we reviewed some library created/related videos on YouTube. When I searched Texas library events, I saw that Abilene Public Library has an active presence on YouTube. Pretty cool! Their videos are well-produced, too, which is important for promoting the library.

I found that UNT does not have a library presence on YouTube, and neither does Weatherford Public Library. Bummer.

Using YouTube for training is a really cool use of the technology. For example, Athens-Clarke county library has a two-part teacher training video. The videos deal with teaching a language acquisition course and being able to create and present a 55 minute lesson plan.

One thing I find irritating about online videos is the streaming gap. I have a wireless connection to my router, and I can NEVER watch a streaming video without that irritating pause.

YouTube is very popular, and it's certainly worth a look-see as a method for creating exposure to a library's services, events, and overall "presence."

I am particularly interested in using YouTube in the Storytelling for Information Professionals course within which I co-teach. By using the privacy feature to limit the viewers to only class participants, we could more easily share recorded student storytelling sessions. Previously, students had to mail videos/DVDs to the campus, we'd stream the media, and then upload it to the Blackboard course.

Thing 19: Google Docs

I was really interested in this Thing, as I'd never used Google Docs before. As with many of the other tools I've FINALLY explored during the North Texas 23 Things, Google Docs was on my "to do" list.

This is a really neat set up. Though I haven't scoured through all of the fine print yet, I can already see how it could be particularly helpful in the unofficial course evals we conduct around mid-semester. I find Blackboard Vista's tools to be rather cumbersome, so this is definitely something I want to discuss further with the professor for which I work.

Plus, UNT offers its members a Google Apps Team Edition ... somthing I had NO idea about until I did this Thing. I used "graphic novels" (exact phrase) to search. I found some interesting stories, programs, and blogs.

When I searched for "Weatherford Public Library," I found one entry announcing Betty Jean Steinshouer from Florida would be brought in to do her Willa Cather Speaks program. This was occuring in April 2oo8, for the library's "big read" day.

When I searched using any words of this string: Willis Library University of North Texas, I got a lot of different information ... the North Texas 23 Things link :0) UNT library job openings, a notation on the new law school, etc.

The tag function is really cool ... They have lots of different ways to look at the tags, so you can go broad or narrow in your search scope. I found this cool list of articles on the What I Learned Today blog. Matt Dickman's Inside Out video was very revealing!

As noted in the video, and on Digg's self description, EVERYTHING is fair game for being "dugg" (wonder how many English teachers are turning over right now ....). Even though I found a couple of items -- and responses -- that I would have like to "digg" or "thumbs up," I didn't do the optional task of creating an account in order to do so. Why, you might ask, since I think this is a pretty cool site? Because I sincerly doubt I'll ever be back. It's great to know about, and if I'm looking for something specific I will certainly keep it in mind, but I don't have enough free time just to surf around on it. Pity ... it would be a cool "job" to have! However, I don't want yet another account to keep up with if all I'm doing is looking for information. I guess it's a good thing the whole social networking thing isn't reliant on MY participation, huh? :0S

I am glad to finally know what Digg is, and I'm glad to have it as a new information resource.

Thing 14: Delicious

Thing 14 wants us to create a delcious.com site. I had a delicious site last year and used it just a little. I liked the idea of how it worked ... more about being able to get to my bookmarks from any computer than looking at other bookmarks. My bookmarks are pretty exciting (not), but you can see them here. Nifty!!!

Wikipedia's Tag article was really helpful for me ... I wasn't aware there are tags were defined in so many different ways (blog tags, official tags, triple tags/machine tags, hash tags). The article also points out the disadvantages of tagging, which are similar to blog replying and other related Web 2.o tools: Information overload, spam (sigh), and just plain junk put out there just so a person can be "on the web."

As with tweets on Twitter, overuse and redundancy can easily cause tag useful to become bloated and unwieldy at some point in the future; at the same time, though, folksonomic research may eventually show a pattern of taggers creating their own usability standards in a certain tagging environment.

Thing 12: Twitter

Well, first off, I went ahead and signed up for Twitter a couple of weeks ago when we were doing Face Book. I made the mistake of following CNN, and immediately got bombarded by tweets out the ears. I quit following them, but the tweets just kept a-comin', so I blocked CNN.

My one or two poor little pitiful tweets can be found under the1tbone.

GRRRRR ... I just went to check it out, and I am STILL being bombarded by CNN. I'll have to see what I can do about that ... OK, a search revealed this is a known issue having to do with a corruption in the Twitter database. Until it is fully resolved, a possible work-around is to go to the member you want to un-follow, follow it, then immediately un-follow it. I've tried it, so we'll see what happens .... Hey, it worked!!! And, it took out all those hundreds (literally) of CNN tweets. YAY!!!

The last time I saw mention of twitter was regarding their server crash due to Michael Jackson's death. I decided to check out its Face Book page after the show. I added myself as a fan, and I wanted to add a comment. When I tried to, I got a message that I needed to submit my mobile phone number so I could be "verified."

What I assume is:
1) this is a Face Book ploy to get my mobile number for future text messaging or
2) The Closer requires this so TNT can send me text messages, even though Face Book says it's their requirement.

Granted, it could be something they require from anyone trying to post a comment on a page, but what if I don't have a mobile phone? One of them even commented on my post on my wall.

I can see where facebook could be really fun, and it also could be very informative. I'm not too impressed yet with the groups I've seen, but I'll keep looking. I joined a couple ... one Best Friends Animal Rescue group and one general nature group.

It's still interesting to me how organizations have jumped on the social software band wagon to keep their names in front of the public and to make it as easy as possible for 1) people to find the organizations using the person's favorite tool of choice 2) the organizations to collect information about people visiting their various pages.

I haven't done a lot with my profile and am still not sure just how much I want to do. Then I made the mistake of following a couple of "jobline" twitters (or however you'd say it in twitter-eze). It immediately made my space look like a list-serv.

Then I go to the North Texas 23 blog and see that Thing 8 is to create an account on Facebook. I went ahead and created one, but I know I'll wind up deleting it.

I looked at the Privacy Policy, and 2 things jumped out:

"Facebook may also collect information about you from other sources, such as newspapers, blogs, instant messaging services, and other users of the Facebook service through the operation of the service (e.g., photo tags) in order to provide you with more useful information and a more personalized experience."

Um, so Facebook will be Googling me 24-7 from here on out. Ewww.

Then, under the subheading Sharing Your Information with Third Parties, is this statement:

"Facebook Beacon is a means of sharing actions you have taken on third party sites, such as when you make a purchase or post a review, with your friends on Facebook. In order to provide you as a Facebook user with clear disclosure of the activity information being collected on third party sites and potentially shared with your friends on Facebook, we collect certain information from that site and present it to you after you have completed an action on that site. You have the choice to have Facebook discard that information, or to share it with your friends.
To learn more about the operation of the service, we encourage you to read the tutorial here. To opt out of the service altogether, click here."

Well, I clicked here, and it took me to the Application Settings - Recently Used page. It mentioned nothing about Beacon. So, I dug around a little and found a statement that said you could control how Beacon worked in -- you guessed it -- the Application Settings page. I am assuming you have to go to this page OFTEN and make sure all your applications are set to be visible to "me only."

And, that deal right there has totally turned me off of Facebook. It seems that what started as a probably great social networking tool has turned into a major marketing device. Anything that tells me it's gonna post my activities without giving me a clearly stated method for turning that function off makes me VERY distrustful.

I'm out.

If I'm wrong about controlling this Beacon app, feel free to let me know ... maybe I can get more excited about Thing 9, which I see is More Facebook ...

Thing 7: RSS Feeds

FYI: I love the Common Craft videos ...

Thing 7 explores RSS feeds ... what they are, how they work, etc. I added Michael Stephens' blog ,the LISNews blog, and the LibraryBytes blog.

The Thing 7 post didn't really give us an assignment other than to add some sites to our reader, so I'm just going to throw out a more general comment:

I'm wanting to do my dissertation on Web 2.0 technologies .... I had added blogs to my blogger.com account, so when I created the account with GoogleReader, the subscriptions were automatically added. I found that when I added my own blog to the reader, I could move it into the folder handling my transferred subscriptions by dragging it to the "My subscriptions" folder.

I found I could change folder names and move items (and other administrative-y stuff) using the "Settings" link waaaaayyyyy up at the top right side of the reader page. Here, I could create a North Texas 23 folder and move my transferred subscriptions to it.

Make sure to check out the GoogleReader FAQ page:

http://www.google.com/help/reader/faq.html

It has lots of neat resources like shortcut keys, how to export your subscriptions to another reader, and different ways of sorting your feeds.

The For Publishers page is a good resource to bookmark for making your blog as accessible as possible:

http://www.google.com/help/reader/publishers.html

Now I just need to move my other feeds over ....

Thing 5!! Flickr!

I spent quite a bit of time on Flickr ... not only looking at pictures (I searched potbellied pigs!!), but also reading the terms of service, privacy statement, etc. I did wind up joining, and I expect I will play with the tool to some extent. I like the idea of being able to share photos and video privately with family and friends, and I'm glad this "Thing" gave me the opportunity to explore the ins and outs of Flickr more ... I'd not taken the time in the past.

The volume is amazing and overwhelming, isn't it?

OK, speaking of "cute!", here's a Flickr pic that caught my eye: http://www.flickr.com/photos/jennylewelling/225639847/. Since I also have a potbellied pig, I had to share this photo here. 'Course, her whole menagerie (http://www.flickr.com/photos/jennylewelling/sets/72157594292375196/) made me laugh and want to share pics of MY menagerie. So, I guess that's part of the point -- and addictive nature -- of Flickr.

Now, if you are wondering about some of the issues members have had with Flickr, here's an example forum on the Notes function: http://www.flickr.com/search/forum/?q=notes+function&s=act.

I do think the idea of libraries and other entities using Flickr to post shots of events, etc. is a GREAT idea. In considering our public library, they could post images and videos of storytelling, genealogy meetings, etc., and the city paper could post the link. And, of course, the link would be available from the library home page. How Web 2.0 Can Apply to my Classes

Library 2.0 … Web 2.0 … I did a Yahoo search using 2.0, and came up with education 2.0, marketing 2.0, wine 2.0, research 2.0 …

Tim O’Reilly noted that “the Web 2.0 meme has become so widespread that companies are now pasting it on as a marketing buzzword.” The danger, I think, is that even if organizations and companies DO grasp the underlying “2.0” meaning, when the phrase gets hyped to death, it begins to lose meaning for the public. It’s like detergents that are “NEW AND IMPROVED!”

But I digress.Thing 2 asks for reflection on Web 2.0 and Library 2.0 how they apply to me and my library. For me, they apply to my work as a teaching assistant in a school of library and information science. Teaching 100% online courses provides a fabulous opportunity not only for implementing new tools, technologies, and methods within the course, but also for seeing how students use those tools in class AND in their own professional and personal lives. Learning about these different “things” will help me know better how different objects can be implemented in the various courses I help to teach and develop.

For instance, I think it would be interesting to use RSS feeds and/or Twitter as a means of alerting students to new posts from the teaching team. And, tagging would be a cool asset to our website resource pages! I’m looking forward to using Google Docs, playing with YouTube, and (hopefully) creating a podcast … all have HUGE potential in the various courses I co-teach, both as a means of delivery AND for student interactivity and collaboration.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://howdy-from-texas.blogspot.com/2009/05/thing-2-or-20-how-web-20-can-apply-to.html' title='Thing 2 ... or 2.0!
